Trading Meditation Series

People overthink this one. Guided or silent, the question is not which is purer, it is which one actually gets you to sit down and do it.

Both are real trading meditation. A guided session hands you a voice to follow. A silent session hands you your own breath. Here is how I pick between them.

The case for silent

The simplest trading meditation there is has no app and no voice. You focus on your breath and count to ten. Ten lands on an out breath. If ten arrives on an in breath, you drifted.

Noticing you drifted is the rep. That is the whole exercise, catching the wander and coming back, again and again.

The case for guided

Silence is hard when your head is loud, and after a rough session your head is loud. A guided voice gives your attention something to hold so you are not fighting yourself the whole time.

Guided also lets you match the session to the situation. A session built for a losing streak is doing different work than a plain breath count, and on the wrong day that difference matters.

“The best meditation is not the purest one, it is the one you actually sit down and do.”

How to choose day to day

Calm morning, clear head, just want to settle before the open? Go silent and count the breath. It is quick and you own it.

Rattled, angry, spiralling after a loss? Go guided, and pick the one built for that exact state. Do not make a tilted mind navigate silence.

MATCH THE TOOL TO THE STATE

Silent when you are steady, guided when you are loud, situational when you are in it.

You do not have to pick forever

This is not an identity. Most weeks I run a silent breath count because it is fast. On the bad days I reach for a guided one and I am glad it exists.

Start guided if you are new. The voice teaches you the shape. Later you can drop it and just breathe.

A guided place to start

If you want somewhere to begin, our Breath meditation, The Count, is exactly this. Counting to ten with a voice until you can do it on your own.

Once it clicks, you will find you can run the same thing in silence at your desk in two minutes.

Frequently asked questions

Is guided or silent meditation better for traders?

Neither is better outright. Silent breath counting suits a calm morning, while a guided session suits a loud head or a specific situation like a losing streak.

What is the simplest silent trading meditation?

Focus on your breath and count to ten, where ten lands on an out breath. If you lose count you drifted, and noticing that is the rep.

Should beginners start with guided meditation?

Usually yes. A guided trading meditation teaches you the shape so you are not fighting silence on day one, and you can move to silent breathing later.
