Trading Meditation Series

A drawdown does something specific to your head. The account is down, the plan suddenly feels wrong, and there is this pull to do something dramatic to win it all back at once.

That pull is the real problem, not the red number. A short trading meditation before you sit down is how you keep a clear head while the equity curve is ugly.

The trap is the escape trade

When you are deep in a drawdown the tempting move is one very risky trade to escape it. Bigger size, wider stop, no real setup, just get me out of here.

That is the exact move that turns a drawdown into a blown account. The challenge is not going anywhere. It will still be there tomorrow, and the day after.

ONE GOOD TRADE BEATS FORCING IT

A single normal trade at your usual size puts you in a far better spot than any hero trade taken out of impatience.

Believe getting out is actually possible

Mindset here is not a soft word. You need to genuinely believe you can climb out without doing anything reckless, because that belief is what lets you keep trading normally.

In practice, most people dig deeper right when they decide the situation is hopeless. Nothing about the drawdown says you have to rush. The maths still works if you keep taking good trades.

“The drawdown is not going anywhere, so you do not have to rush your way out of it.”

Settle the body before you decide anything

When the account is bleeding your nervous system is loud. A racing heart makes every rushed idea feel urgent and correct.

So slow the exhale down. Breathe in, then let the out-breath run longer than the in-breath. A few of those and the volume drops enough to think clearly. This is the fastest lever you have on your own arousal.

Come back to the line

There is a state the book Best Loser Wins calls the line. Flat, awake, level. Above it you get urgency and greed, below it you get fear. Good decisions come from the line, not from panic.

That is what our Focus meditation, Finding The Line, is built to train. Run it before a session while you are still in the drawdown, and you give yourself the calm to trade your way out one normal decision at a time.

Frequently asked questions

How do you trade through a drawdown without panicking?

Keep your size normal and take only real setups. The escape trade is what blows accounts. A short trading meditation before the session keeps you calm enough to wait for good trades instead of forcing one.

Should I trade bigger to recover a drawdown faster?

No. Bigger size in a drawdown is the most common way traders turn a bad week into a failed account. Recover at your usual risk, one good trade at a time.

Why do I keep making a drawdown worse?

Usually because the red number raises your arousal and rushed ideas start to feel urgent. Slow your exhale, get grounded, and remember the challenge is still there tomorrow.
