Trading Meditation Series

Patience is the part of trading nobody wants to practise, because it looks like doing nothing. I used to treat waiting as dead time, the boring bit before the real work. That was a mistake.

Here is how I see it now. Waiting is not a break from trading, it is trading, and a short trading meditation is how you build the patience to actually sit through it.

Patience is part of the skill, not separate from it

Think about an athlete warming up. If they decide the warmup is irrelevant, they skip it and get hurt. If they understand it is part of the exercise, they do it without arguing about it.

Patience works the same way. It is not a personality trait you either have or you don’t. It is a skill inside the job, and the job includes the hours where the right move is to do nothing.

WAITING IS THE JOB

Sitting through nothing is not the price of trading well, it is the trading itself.

The sizing test
Drag the slider. How much emotion is driving this trade right now?

Calm and flat. If the setup is good, take it at your normal size.

Waiting is a position

When you are flat and watching, you are not out of the market. You are holding a position called cash, and choosing not to trade is a real decision with a real edge.

Once you see it that way, sitting on your hands stops feeling like weakness. It starts to feel like the trade you are actually making right now.

“Doing nothing is a decision, and most days it is the right one.”

Boredom is a sensation, not a signal

The pull to click is usually not a setup. It is boredom, and boredom is a feeling in your body, not information about the market.

A trading meditation trains you to notice that feeling and let it sit there without acting. You feel the itch, you name it as boredom, and you stop confusing it for a signal.

BOREDOM IS NOT A SETUP

The urge to trade because nothing is happening is a mood, not a chart.

How to sit with the urge instead of acting on it

This is urge surfing. You notice the urge to force a trade, you don't act, and you watch it rise, peak, and fade on its own.

I won't tell you it passes in some fixed number of minutes, because that is folklore. What is true is that urges come and go once you stop feeding them, and every time you let one pass you get better at letting the next one pass.

Train it before the session with the Patience meditation

You can practise this ahead of time. Sit for five minutes, focus on your breath, and when the urge to check your phone shows up, treat it as a rep instead of a problem.

Our Patience meditation, Doing Nothing, is built for exactly this. It puts you in the seat where nothing is happening on purpose, so sitting through a quiet market later feels familiar rather than unbearable.

Frequently asked questions

Is patience really part of trading skill?

Yes. Waiting for your setup is not separate from trading, it is part of the job, the same way a warmup is part of an athlete's exercise rather than a distraction from it.

How do I stop trading out of boredom?

Treat boredom as a sensation, not a signal. A short trading meditation before the open trains you to notice the itch to click and let it pass without acting on it.

What is urge surfing in trading?

Noticing the urge to force a trade, not acting, and watching it rise and fade on its own. You do not fight it or feed it, you just let it pass, and it gets easier each time.
