Prop Firm Blog – Propvator

Trading Talk with Eman · Ep. 46

When selecting a prop firm, traders weigh a lot of things. The one they usually skip is whether the firm actually fits their trading strategy and style.

There are a lot of firms and it is hard to choose. We built Propvator to make it easier, with reliable firms only, so you can focus on things like whether the conditions match how you trade.

Key takeaways

1
Match the firm to your style

Reliability is a must, but after that the rules and conditions have to fit your strategy.

2
Watch the commission per lot

As a scalper you do not want to pay high commissions like $6 per lot, since the industry standard runs about six to seven dollars.

3
Scalpers want low or zero commission

Look for a firm with zero commission and slightly wider spreads, or a small commission, so fees do not eat your profits.

4
Swing traders need holds

If you hold overnight or over the weekend, pick a firm that allows it so you can trade your strategy freely.

5
Check the news trading rule

News is fully allowed only when there are no restrictions, not when you simply cannot trade minutes around the event.

6
Sort it before the challenge

Get the conditions right up front so problems do not start after you have already begun.

Commissions matter more than you think

The first thing to check is the commission structure, how much you pay per lot. As a scalper you do not want to be paying $6 per lot or more.

I once picked a firm while scalping and it was going well, but I realized I could have passed my challenge two days earlier if not for how much I had paid in commission. So I switched to a better firm and hit the target faster.

It continues once you are funded. A lot of what you would make in payouts ends up going to commissions. On Propvator you can click the commissions column and sort from lowest to highest to compare firms side by side.

“I could have passed my challenge two days earlier because of how much I had paid in commission.”

Swing traders need the right holds

It is not just scalpers who need the right platform. Swing traders typically hold trades overnight and sometimes over the weekend.

Even a swing trader who does not hold for weeks still wants that option in case they need it. So they need a firm that allows holding overnight and over the weekend.

Pick a firm that does not allow it and you are at a big disadvantage, unable to trade your strategy the way you normally would.

The news trading catch

News trading is restricted by a lot of firms, and they will not let you open positions a couple of minutes before an event. For a scalper with tight stops that may not be an issue, since you can plan around the news.

For a swing trader you want the freedom to keep a position open and close it whenever you choose. On Propvator you can click a firm’s name and check the rules in a quick snapshot.

Watch the wording. A lot of firms say news is allowed but then bar you from closing five minutes before the event. That is a restriction. News is only truly allowed when there are no conditions at all, and that is the standard we go by.

Sort the conditions before you start

Reliability is non-negotiable, but once you have checked that, ask whether the rules and restrictions match your needs before you select the firm.

Look at commissions, leverage, and the rules together. As a scalper you do not want very low leverage, since you want room to take bigger positions, but commissions especially deserve a close look.

Do this beforehand and you increase your chances of passing and making consistent payouts, which lets you scale and add accounts. Pick the wrong one and you waste time, have to switch, and may fail because the conditions do not fit.
