Trading Meditation Series

Refreshing your P&L every thirty seconds does nothing for the trade. It just feeds a loop that pulls your attention off the chart and onto the money.

The number is a result. Your job is the process that makes it. A short trading meditation is how you get your attention back where it belongs.

Why you cannot stop looking

Checking the P&L gives a tiny hit either way. Green feels good, red makes you look again to see if it changed. Both train the habit.

The problem is that watching the number does not improve the decision. It only raises your arousal and makes you more reactive.

WATCHING IT CHANGES NOTHING

The number moves whether you stare at it or not, and staring only makes you reactive.

Try it now
Breathe with the circle. In for 4, long out for 6.
Breathe in

The urge to check is a wave

The pull to glance at your balance rises, peaks, and fades if you let it. You do not have to obey it.

Next time you feel it, try leaving it alone. Notice the urge, take one slow breath, and keep your eyes on the setup. The urge passes on its own.

“The P&L is a scoreboard. You do not win by staring at the scoreboard.”

Put your attention on the process

Decide before the session what you are actually watching. The level, the entry, the invalidation, your size. Those are the things you control.

The P&L sits downstream of all of that. When you trade the process well, the number takes care of itself over time.

THE NUMBER IS DOWNSTREAM

Trade the level, the entry, and the size, and the P&L follows on its own.

A simple practice to break the loop

Five minutes of breath focus before the open trains the exact muscle. An urge to check, you notice it, you come back to the breath. Same loop, lower stakes.

In practice this makes the live version easier. You have already rehearsed catching the pull and letting it go.

Trade from the line, not the number

The calm, level state your best decisions come from does not survive a P&L you refresh every minute. Getting back to it means putting the number down.

Our Focus meditation, Finding The Line, is a good daily habit for keeping your attention on the process instead of the running total.

Frequently asked questions

Why do I keep checking my P&L?

Because each glance gives a small hit and the habit feeds itself. It feels productive but it only raises your arousal and pulls your attention off the trade.

How do I stop obsessively checking my P&L?

Treat the urge to check like a wave. Notice it, breathe, and keep your eyes on the process. A trading meditation trains that exact return so it gets easier live.

Should I hide my P&L while trading?

For many traders, yes. Hiding the running total removes the trigger while you build the habit of trading the process instead of the number.
