Trading Meditation Series

Focus in trading is not staring harder at the screen. It is being in the one state where your judgement actually works, and a trading meditation for focus is how you get back there on demand.

The idea I keep coming back to is the line. It comes from Tom Hougaard in his book Best Loser Wins, and once you have felt it, you notice the moment you drift off it.

What the line actually is

The line is a flat, awake, level state. You are alert but not urgent. You can see the chart without the chart pulling you around.

Above the line you get urgency and greed, the part of you that wants to size up and chase. Below it you get fear and hesitation, the part that skips the setup you planned to take. Your best decisions come from the line itself.

FIND THE LINE

Above it is greed and urgency, below it is fear and hesitation, and your real edge lives on the line.

Watch the line
Above it: greed and urgency. Below it: fear. The line is where judgement works.

The line

Why focus is a state, not effort

People try to force focus by gritting their teeth. That usually pushes you above the line into tension, which is the opposite of what you want.

Focus is closer to settling than to straining. You quiet the noise, drop your shoulders, and let attention land on the one thing that matters. That is a skill you can practise, not a mood you wait for.

“Above the line you chase, below it you freeze. Your best trades come from the line itself.”

Rehearse the wobble so it does not own you

Here is the part most people skip. You do not train focus by only practising calm. You train it by raising your arousal on purpose in a safe setting, then walking yourself back to the line.

Picture a trade going hard against you, feel the jolt, then bring the breath long and slow and come back to level. The skill is the return, not the absence of the feeling. Do that a few times and the real moment stops surprising you.

A short focus routine before the open

Five minutes of trading meditation is plenty. Sit, lengthen your exhales, and find that flat awake state before you look at a single chart.

Then name where you are. If you feel the pull upward into urgency, you are above the line. Breathe until you settle back. Starting the session on the line is worth more than another hour of analysis.

The meditation built for this

If you want to practise the line directly, our Focus meditation, Finding The Line, is built around exactly this idea from Best Loser Wins.

It gives you a guided way to feel the state, drift off it, and come back, so that during a live session you already know the way home.

Frequently asked questions

What is the line in trading?

It is a term from Best Loser Wins by Tom Hougaard for the calm, awake, level state your best decisions come from. Above it is greed and urgency, below it is fear and hesitation.

How do I improve focus before trading?

Run a short trading meditation before the open. Lengthen your exhales, settle into that flat awake state, and only then open your charts. Starting on the line beats forcing focus mid-session.

Can you actually train focus?

Yes. You raise your arousal on purpose in a safe setting and then practise the return to a calm state until it becomes automatic. The return is the skill you are building.
