Trading Meditation Series

Overtrading almost never comes from a lack of setups. It comes from not being able to sit still when there is nothing to do.

I have given back more progress to boredom clicks than to bad analysis. A short trading meditation is how I learned to feel the boredom and not act on it.

Boredom is a sensation, not a signal

When the screen goes quiet your body gets restless. That restlessness feels like information, like the market is telling you to do something. It is not. It is just discomfort looking for an exit.

The job is to notice the feeling and label it for what it is. Boredom. Once you name it, it stops pretending to be a trade idea.

BOREDOM IS NOT A SETUP

The itch to click is a feeling in your body, not a signal on the chart.

The sizing test
Drag the slider. How much emotion is driving this trade right now?

Calm and flat. If the setup is good, take it at your normal size.

Urge surfing the click

An urge to trade behaves like a wave. It rises, it peaks, and if you leave it alone it fades on its own.

You do not have to fight it or win an argument with it. You watch it. I do not put a timer on this, because the folklore about how long an urge lasts is nonsense. You stay with it until it passes.

“The market did not ask you to trade. Your boredom did.”

Why a short session before the open helps

The best time to train this is before you trade, not in the heat of a dead session. Five to ten minutes of watching the breath teaches the exact move you need later. An urge shows up, you notice, you do not act.

People tell me they have no time for this. In practice we waste far more than ten minutes on things that help us less.

Sitting through nothing is the skill

Waiting is not the boring part before the trading. Waiting is the trading. Like an athlete warming up, if you think it is separate from the job you skip it, and it costs you.

This is exactly what our Patience meditation, Doing Nothing, is built for. It trains you to sit in the gap between setups without needing to fill it.

WAITING IS A POSITION

Sitting on your hands through a quiet session is not idle time, it is the trade.

Frequently asked questions

What causes overtrading?

Usually not a lack of setups. It is the discomfort of doing nothing, which the mind dresses up as a trade idea. Overtrading is mostly an impulse control problem, not a strategy one.

Can meditation actually stop overtrading?

It will not delete the urge to click. What a trading meditation does is make you aware of the urge as it rises, so you can let it pass instead of acting on it.

How long before I notice a difference?

Most people feel calmer in the first session. The real change, catching the urge in real time, builds over a few weeks of short daily practice.
