Most traders rehearse nothing. They open the platform, take the trade, and only find out how they will react once real money is moving. That is a bad time to meet yourself.
Visualization fixes that. Done as part of a short trading meditation, it lets you rehearse the trade going for you and against you before the open, so the real decision lands from a calmer place.
What visualization actually is
This is not daydreaming about a big win. It is closer to the opposite. You picture the ordinary version of the trade, including the part where it goes against you and you sit in red for a while.
You watch yourself follow the plan anyway. Same size, same stop, same reasoning. You are rehearsing the behaviour, not the profit.
Why rehearsing the bad version works
Here is the mechanism. You raise a little arousal on purpose in a safe setting, then practise the return to baseline until it is automatic. The skill you are building is the return, not the absence of the feeling.
So you picture price stabbing through your entry, you notice the small jolt of fear, and you breathe through it while you hold the plan. Do that a few mornings and the live version stops surprising you.
The point is not to feel nothing, it is to feel the jolt and come back to level anyway.
“Meet yourself in rehearsal, not in the middle of a live trade.”
The line, from Best Loser Wins
Tom Hougaard writes about this in Best Loser Wins. He talks about coming back to the line, the flat, awake, level state your best decisions come from.
Above the line you get urgency and greed. Below it you get fear and hesitation. Visualization is one way to practise finding the line before you need it, not during the trade when it is hardest.
A simple way to run it
Sit for 5 minutes before the open. Breathe for a minute to settle. Then run one full trade in your head from setup to exit, including one version that loses cleanly.
Keep it ordinary. You are not scripting a hero moment, you are teaching your nervous system that both outcomes are normal and neither one needs a reaction.
Where to start
If sitting with a blank mind feels awkward, use a guided version. Our Focus meditation, Finding The Line, is built directly around this idea from Best Loser Wins.
Make it your trading meditation before the open. Picture the trade both ways, and let the line become the place you trade from.
Seven guided trading meditations, made around exactly what traders go through, not generic calm. Pick the one that fits your day.
Frequently asked questions
It is rehearsing a trade in your head before the open, including the version that goes against you, so your real decision lands calmer. It works best as part of a short trading meditation rather than on its own.
Five minutes is plenty. Settle with a minute of breathing, then run one full trade from setup to exit, including one clean loss.
No. Picturing only wins sets you up to panic when it turns red. Rehearse the ordinary trade and the losing version so both feel normal.
